Over 60 outstanding clergymen and laymen, Protestant and Catholic, representing 14 denominations participated." "After hearing Dr. James G. McDonald, Dr. John M. Whyte, Dr. Henry Smith Leiper, Prof. Paul J. Tillich and with a full and free discussion, the following resolution was adopted:" "As Christian clergymen and laymen, devoted to ideals of freedom of religious worship, of speech, press and assembly, we have been appalled by revelations made by men who have personally visited Germany and by individuals who are thoroughly familiar with the tragic conditions in which several thousand heroic Christian refugees from Germany have been placed through no fault of their own. We note with gratitude the assistance that has been rendered to Christian refugees by organizations of the Jewish people. Assembled here at Riverside Church in New York City on Tuesday, October 6th, 1936, 23 hereby record our sense of the imminence and urgency of the situation in which the Christian Refugees from Germany find themselves and of the obligations of Christian churches in the United States to extend to them their intelligent sympathy and to come to their relief, and express the belief that every effort should be out forth to disseminate as widely as possible the facts as to the deplorable plight of these, our suffering brethren. We express, also, the hope that every Christian clergyman in the United States will aquaint himself with the facts and place before his congregation the desperate need of these refugees so that funds may be raised to save them from extinction and to provide for their permanent establishment in countries where they can become self-supporting. A small sum contributed by each Christian church in the United States now will alleviate the immediate needs of these unhappy exiles for food, clothing and shelter, and aid in finding asylum for them. "Our own deep, personal concern in this grave problem leads us to make this appeal, and to pray that it may find sympathy in the hearts of every Christian man and woman in this nation." "Dr. James G. McDonald, former High Commissioner of the League of Nations for German refugees; honored in foreign lands as well as our own for his high minded and statesmanlike efforts on behalf of the oppressed; whose inspiration and sposorship brought into being the American Committee for Christian German Refugees, and similar International and National Committees in Europe, will introduce the speaker."
