113456^The first motion picture views of the making of Radium. The Dawn of a Miracle 1) Dr. S.A. Sochocky is shown at his laboratory in Orange New Jersey (the same town that Edison had his lab) holding up a piece of Radium. 2) The process of creating Radium is formed by the radioactive disintegration of uranium and is consequently found in all uranium ores. It is extracted from the ore by the addition of a compound of barium that acts as a carrier. The chemical properties of radium are similar to those of barium, and the two substances are removed from the other components of the ore by precipitation of barium and radium sulfate. The sulfates are converted into carbonates or sulfides, which are then dissolved in hydrochloric acid. The radium is separated from the barium as the end result of successive crystallizations of the chloride solutions. 3) The final product - the crystals are compared in size to a pocket watch. 4) When the Radium was filmed strange marks appeard on the negative which were then being simply called static streaks but which are actually caused from radiation. Scientist were beginning to prove that radium contains a titanic energy which they believed could one day be released and controlled and that a few milligrams could drive a great steamer. ^DOOR THAT HAS NO LOCK^The story examines impact of immigration on quality of life in the United States.
